RapidChange was formed when a nun, a brain researcher and a Fortune 500 executive got together in 1990 and asked a simple question:
“Why do so few companies and so few corporate initiatives succeed?”
Their study 60 Fortune 100 companies found that just 30 percent of the publicly shared business strategies succeeded. That number has not varied much in subsequent years.
So what made the difference between the 70 percent failures and 30 percent winners?
They thought the answer might be the number of patents a company held. Or maybe it had to do with being in high growth businesses or markets. It could be determined by scale – if you're number one it is easy to be profitable, if you're number 10 it isn't so easy.
Turns out it was none of those.
They found highly profitable companies where you wouldn't expect to find them: small businesses out-profiting their larger competitor or commodity businesses that were making double-digit margins.
We consistently find that successful businesses set forth deliberate efforts to engage people at all levels. Employees have to be excited and invested in the company's success. In good times those companies do very well. In bad times they do better than their competition.
